DataBeyond: Reducing Costs and Generating Revenue Through Intelligent Sorting of Mixed Municipal Solid Waste

Oct 16, 2026

Mixed municipal solid waste management affects both environmental performance and public service expenditure. By recovering recyclable materials through intelligent sorting before final disposal, municipalities can reduce disposal costs while creating additional revenue opportunities for operators.

DataBeyond’s intelligent sorting solution for mixed municipal solid waste can process up to 500 tonnes per day. Designed to reduce the amount of waste requiring final disposal by approximately 30%, the solution integrates intelligent equipment and coordinated processing stages into waste transfer operations, following a clear approach: sort first, recover resources, then dispose of the remaining waste.

Based on waste composition, processing capacity and site conditions, DataBeyond combines AI-powered optical sorters, embodied AI robots and pretreatment processes to identify, separate and collect recyclable materials. Recoverable materials are sorted and baled for recycling, while residual waste continues through the existing final disposal system.

Reducing final disposal volumes creates measurable savings for local governments.

Where waste incineration services are billed by actual tonnage, sending less waste to incineration facilities can lower the corresponding disposal charges. For a system processing 500 tonnes per day with an approximately 30% reduction target, projected savings in incineration service fees could reach tens of millions of yuan over three years, depending on applicable fees and operating conditions. Lower tonnage sent for incineration can also reduce transport requirements along this route.

This approach connects resource recovery with public expenditure savings. Its value can be measured through changes in actual disposal tonnage and associated costs, providing local governments with a basis for optimizing waste management expenditure.

Sharing verified cost savings creates an incentive for sustained operation.

One possible cooperation model involves the operator funding the equipment and participating in resource recovery operations, while sharing verified disposal cost savings with the local government. For example, these savings could be divided equally, with 50% allocated to the government and 50% to the operator, subject to the terms of the agreement.

The government retains a share of the savings, while the operator earns a return linked to actual waste reduction performance. Measuring incoming waste, sorted outputs and residual waste sent for disposal allows both parties to assess results against verifiable operating data.

Recovered materials provide an additional revenue stream for operators.

Alongside its share of cost savings, the operator can generate revenue from recovered recyclables. Under the cooperation agreement, the operator may obtain these materials, sort and bale them according to material type, quality and downstream demand, and sell them to recycling and reprocessing businesses.

The continuous generation of municipal waste provides an ongoing source of recoverable materials. Turning those materials into revenue requires high sorting purity, controlled contamination and moisture levels, and reliable downstream buyers. DataBeyond focuses on aligning equipment, processing methods and material outlets to help operators improve the value of their recovered outputs.

Project economics must also account for the full operating cycle. Energy consumption, labor, maintenance, material transport and residual waste disposal costs should be assessed alongside shared savings and material sales revenue to support long-term operation.

Resource recovery at waste transfer stations should work together with source separation. Proper separation at the point of disposal, intelligent sorting at the transfer stage and downstream recycling collectively improve the efficiency of the waste collection and treatment system. This approach also aligns with China’s policy direction of advancing household waste separation and supporting the recycling of low-value materials. Policy reference

The aim is to deliver measurable savings for governments, create additional revenue for operators and connect recovered materials with viable end markets. Through intelligent equipment and integrated system solutions, DataBeyond will continue to advance waste reduction, resource recovery and efficient operation in mixed municipal solid waste management.
